Churchtown Day To Feature Yard Sales And More

A tradition that began 38 years ago on the first Saturday in August will continue as the Caernarvon Historical Society presents Churchtown Day on Saturday, Aug. 6. The event will feature community yard sales along with breakfast and lunch items prepared at the Caernarvon Fire Company.

People will be invited to shop for bargains at yard sales that will begin at 7 a.m. on Route 23 in Churchtown, as well as in neighboring communities. "It's amazing what you find," said Yvonne Styer, historical society president and historian.

Caernarvon Historical Society will also host a flea market at its property, 2148 Main St., Narvon, and at the property next door, at Caernarvon Township Park, which is where the Caernarvon Elementary School once stood. Sales will be held both inside and outside the historical society building. Bottled water will also be offered for sale.

"Items are donated by members of our society," said Styer, noting that she and other members put items aside throughout the year in preparation for Churchtown Day. "We accumulate a lot of stuff. We have anything and everything. We will have all kind of different books, kitchen (items) and glassware."

Those interested in renting a yard sale space in the park are asked to call Betty Martin at 717-445-5614 or stop by the society any Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Vendors will get a 12-foot-wide space, and they must bring their own tables. Vendors are responsible for cleaning up any debris or items they do not sell.

In addition to the flea markets, the Caernarvon Fire Company will offer grab-and-go breakfast sandwiches, baked goods and coffee, milk and juice from 6 to 8 a.m. Beginning at 9 a.m., the fire company will offer a carryout lunch. The meal will include a barbecued pulled pork sandwich, a pickle, applesauce, cookies, chips and a beverage. Pulled pork will also be sold by the quart. The fire company is located at 2145 Main St., Narvon. For more information, including pricing, search for "Caernarvon Fire Company" on Facebook.

Proceeds from the flea market will benefit the society and the upkeep of its building, which includes a local history museum with displays of local artifacts. "The building is open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment," noted Styer. "We have a library of history books and research books and obituaries ... and an archives room," she said, noting that museum displays are changed several times a year. Currently on display are paintings of one-room schools by Morgantown artist Jere Brady.

The Caernarvon Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the history of Caernarvon Township. The society was first established in 1975 and is located in the former Caernarvon Presbyterian Church, which was restored in 1976. In addition to Churchtown Day in August, the society hosts a Memorial Day celebration and hosts history programs with local guest speakers.
