Churchtown Day To Feature Yard Sales, Pancake Breakfast

Members of the Caernarvon Historical Society will present Churchtown Day, featuring community yard sales as well as a pancake breakfast prepared at the Caernarvon Fire Company, on Saturday, Aug. 2. The event will be held rain or shine.

This is the 41st year for Churchtown Day, which is traditionally held on the first Saturday in August. Yard sales will begin at 7 a.m. on Route 23 in Churchtown, as well as in neighboring communities and at Caernarvon Township Park, which is where the Caernarvon Elementary School once stood.

A highlight of the event this year will be the Caernarvon Historical Society's own flea market held at its headquarters, 2148 Main St., Narvon. "We had (the flea market) inside and outside. This year, it will be inside," noted Yvonne Styer, historical society president and historian. "People can walk around and pick up what they want and then pay for it (at the cashier). The front doors will be open."

Items for sale in the society's building will include frames; toys; books; housewares, including glassware; and seasonal decor, including Christmas ornaments, Easter items and Halloween decorations. "Everything (for sale) was a donation," Styer said, noting that all items will be reasonably priced.

Those interested in renting a yard sale space in the park are asked to call Styer at 717-413-8342 or stop by the historical society any Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Vendors will get a 12-foot-wide space, and they must bring their own tables.

Vendors are responsible for cleaning up any debris and items they do not sell. The historical society reserves the right to refuse yard sale vendors who are not offering family-friendly items for sale.

In addition, the Caernarvon Fire Company will offer a pancake breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m. on Aug. 2. The menu will include a stack of pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee. There will be separate prices for adults and children ages 4 to 10.

The fire company is located at 2145 Main St., Narvon. For more information, search for "Caernarvon Fire Company" on Facebook.

Proceeds from the flea market will benefit the society and the upkeep of its building, which includes a local history museum with displays of local artifacts. The building is open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. The building houses a library of history books and research books, obituaries and an archives room. Museum displays are changed several times a year.

The society also presents a "Let's Talk History" program on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m.

The Caernarvon Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the history of Caernarvon Township. The society was established in 1975 and is located in the former Caernarvon Presbyterian Church. In addition to Churchtown Day in August, the society hosts a Memorial Day celebration.
