Civil War history group sets activities

The Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will meet on Friday, Oct. 13, at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Enola. Attendees should arrive by 7 p.m. The lecture will also be broadcast via Zoom.

Scott L. Mingus Sr., a historian who has written 30 books on the Civil War, will examine the enduring controversy over the whereabouts of Confederate cavalryman J.E.B. Stuart before and during the Battle of Gettysburg. Many people erroneously believe that Stuart was on a glory ride around the Army of the Potomac while the Battle of Gettysburg raged, deliberately depriving Robert E. Lee of "the eyes and ears of the army." Mingus will discuss Stuart's route north, the obstacles that caused him to miss his planned connection with Lee's army near the Susquehanna River, and the exhausting ride over the hills of York County from June 30 to July 2, 1863, concurrent with the first two days of the Battle of Gettysburg.

The lecture is free. For more information, visit https://harrisburgcwrt.org or contact Stephen Smith, programs chair, at 717-433-0209.

Additionally, the Harrisburg and Hershey Civil War round tables will sponsor a fall field trip to Winchester, Va., on Saturday, Nov. 4. The trip will focus on the Second Battle of Winchester, which took place in mid-June of 1863 and was a stunning Union defeat that opened the door for the Army of Northern Virginia's invasion of Pennsylvania. The Second Battle of Winchester led directly to the Battle of Gettysburg. Mingus, the co-author of the leading book on the battle and a subject matter expert on the 1863 invasion, will serve as the tour guide.

The fee includes round trip transportation by motor coach, entrance fees, the guide honorarium, and a buffet lunch at the Golden Corral in Winchester. Participants may board the bus at Lower Dauphin High School, 201 S. Hanover St., Hummelstown, at 6:30 a.m. or at the Camp Hill Shopping Center, 3307 Trindle Road, Camp Hill, at 7 a.m. The bus will drop off participants at the same locations early in the evening.
