Club Announces Awards, Service Activity

The Hershey Lions Club recently assisted the Hershey History Center, home of the Hershey-Derry Township Historical Society, with its beautification project. With the exception of 2020, the Hershey Lions have for several years assisted this Derry Township organization with sprucing up the exterior of its building. This location is also now the home of the Hershey Lions Club. Twelve members of the Hershey Lions Club worked on May 14 to weed, edge, and apply organic mulch at the center's barn.

The Hershey Lions Club presented a $1,000 scholarship to Hershey High School student Samantha Koegler, daughter of Dawn and Stephen Koegler Jr. The funds will go toward Samantha's continued education. The club announced Koegler's selection for the scholarship during its May meeting at the Hershey History Center.

Samantha was chosen due to her extensive history of volunteering and academic success. Samantha volunteered with Mini-THON for several years, and during her senior year, when Samantha was executive director, the effort raised $40,386 in support of Four Diamonds. She has also volunteered at a number of medical facilities.

Samantha plans to attend Bowdoin College to major in English and biochemistry with a minor in dance. She then plans to pursue a Doctor of Medicine/Ph.D. in pediatric oncology.

A member of the Hershey Lions Club was also recently honored. John Mallonee received an award at the Lions District 14-T Convention in Harrisburg on April 23. District 14-T consists of Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, and Perry counties.

Past international director Don Noland, visiting from St. Peters, Mo., observed the presentation of the Pennsylvania Counsellors Distinguished Service Award to Mallonee by current district governor Peg Hummel. Mallonee was nominated by Hummel, who noted that Mallonee has served his community in unique ways with his time and talents.

Mallonee served previously as district governor in District 14-T , is the president-elect for the Hershey Lions Club for the 2022 to 2024 Lions years, and is coordinating the club's recycling project. He is the website manager for several organizations. Mallonee assisted the New Bloomfield Lions with a recent community play and has performed in several Hershey Playhouse productions.

Lions Clubs are groups of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to meet those needs.
