Community band plans holiday concerts

ValleyView Alliance Church, 200 Alliance Ave, Hellam, will host a holiday concert by the local Twin Rose Community Band on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary.

The first half of the program will include "Joyful World," arranged by Carter; "Jingle Bells"; the Dave Brubeck-style "The Holidays in Five," arranged by Fagan; and "Winterscape" by Lendt.  A Christmas sing-along will include "O Come, All Ye Faithful," "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing," "Silent Night," and "Jingle Bells."

The second half of the concert will feature "Fanfare and Hark! the Herald Angels Sing," arranged by Davis; "Good King Wenceslas," arranged by Nestico; "All I Want For Christmas Is You," arranged by Kerchner; "The Christmas Song," arranged by Higgins; and "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson.

The band has long been led by George Bradshaw, who recently retired from the position of director of bands and fine arts department chair at Dover Area High School. He is now helping to develop future music directors with Messiah University. A graduate of Eastern York High School, he obtained his Bachelor of Music in music education from Mansfield University, where he studied the trumpet with Michael Galloway and wind conducting with Donald Stanley. In 2002, Bradshaw obtained a master's degree in music education from Duquesne University.

The event is open to the public. A freewill offering will be received for the band.

The band will conclude its holiday season with a performance at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 22. It will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 243 Hellam St., Wrightsville.

Twin Rose has a long history in York County, beginning with its founding in Long Level by veterans of the Civil War. The band has gone through many names since its founding, from its original name of the Long Level Silver Cornet Band, to the Long Level Band, and then to the VFW Band when the ensemble moved across the river to Columbia in 1999. When the band moved back to Wrightsville in 2014, it changed its name to the Twin Rose Community Band to honor both of the counties in which it has performed. Twin Rose includes ValleyView's pastor, Lee Nanfelt, on the trumpet.

The band practices weekly at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wrightsville. New members are welcome. For more information, visit http://www.twinrose.bravesites.com.
