Community Day to feature children's activities, live music and food

Building on the success of last year's event, Sadsbury Township will hold its second annual Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Events, which will include children's activities, live music and a chance to win prizes, will be held rain or shine at the township building, located at 7182 White Oak Road, Christiana.

Children's activities, including pumpkin painting and games, will be available throughout the day. A candy scramble will take place around 1 p.m. There will also be hayrides around the property, weather permitting.

Free hot dogs, chips, drinks and ice cream will be provided by the township. New this year will be free pies and cupcakes. Christiana Fire Company will have chicken barbecue dinners available to purchase.

"There is no charge for anything unless you want to purchase the chicken barbecue from the fire company," said Lin Newlin, a member of the organizing committee.

The Rockdale Boys from Delaware County will be on hand to perform bluegrass and gospel music. Attendees should bring lawn chairs for seating.

All attendees will have an opportunity to win prizes donated by local businesses. "Everybody age 18 and over will be given a ticket, and we will (announce winners) throughout the event," Newlin pointed out. People do not have to be present to win.

All events will take place outdoors, but in the case of rain, activities will be moved inside the garage area of the township building.

Because of inclement weather last year, some of the activities were moved indoors. "It rained last year, so we were not able to do the hayrides, but we had a break in the rain, so we were able to do the kids' candy scramble, which was an outside event," Newlin noted. "We have enough room to have all activities indoors. We are hoping not to have to do that this year."

She said the goal of the day is for residents to meet their neighbors as well as township officials. "The purpose of the event is to promote friendly good will between the township residents and the businesses in the township and to let them meet the township supervisors and staff," Newlin said. "(Township officials) are there throughout the day, so people can mix and mingle with them."

"It worked out so well last year," she added. "People reacted positively to (Community Day), and we decided to do it again."
