Connecting Veterans to Vital Resources

For many veterans, navigating the world of benefits and services can feel overwhelming. From health care and counseling to education, employment and burial benefits, the resources available are numerous, but figuring out where to begin can be a challenge. That's where members of the American Legion Post 185 in Mount Joy hope to make a difference.

To help veterans and their families access the benefits they've earned, Post 185 will host a Veteran Benefit Information Session on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy.

"The purpose is to connect the veterans and their family members directly to the organizations and key points of contact that can assist them across a variety of resources," explained Stacey Miller, service officer for the American Legion. Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation with the right person to open doors to the help they need, she said.

While the event will take place in Mount Joy, it is open to veterans from all parts of Lancaster County. The Legion has invited a wide range of agencies and partners to be part of the event. Representatives from the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and VFW state headquarters will be available to answer questions about VA hospital benefits and the process for applying. Veterans will also be able to learn about burial benefits, with representatives from Sheetz Funeral Home and Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery on hand to provide guidance and information.

Recognizing that wellness extends beyond physical health, the Lancaster Vet Center will share resources focused on mental health and counseling services. The Building Bridges Foundation, known for its equine-assisted therapy programs, will also participate, offering information about how working with horses can support emotional healing and recovery for veterans.

The evening will begin in the church sanctuary with a short presentation outlining the various veteran benefits and how to access them. Afterward, attendees will have time to visit information tables in the fellowship hall, enjoy light refreshments and connect with representatives one on one.

"(There will be time) for everyone to network with other veterans, ask questions and gain the resources they seek," Miller said, noting that organizers want to make it easier for all veterans to find the help they deserve.

To assist with planning, veterans and family members are encouraged, but not required, to register on the American Legion's event page at http://bit.ly/4nqcMFG.
