County Bird Club Posts Activities

The Lancaster County Bird Club will offer several field trips and a program in September. The public is invited free of charge. For the trips, participants must register with the trip leader no later than 6 p.m. the day before the trip with the exception of the Raptor Watch on Sunday, Sept. 25.

The club will meet Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. This meeting, which is free and open to the public, will not be recorded. After a short business meeting, a representative of ZooAmerica will present "Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tails," a program featuring live animals.

At the meeting, Barbara Hunsberger will be honored for her 12 years of service as club president, which wrapped up this past spring. Board members from Appalachian Audubon Society in Harrisburg will provide an update on the Lights Out Harrisburg initiative, which protects birds during their migration by minimizing outdoor lighting during peak migration times. On Saturday, Sept. 10, the destination will be Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area with a 7:30 a.m. and/or a 1 p.m. start. Contact Ted Nichols at 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com. The emphasis of this trip is fall migrants such as warblers, flycatchers, thrushes, and shorebirds.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, the destination is Pumping Station Road off Route 322, west of Brickerville. This is a popular spot for warblers and fall migrants. The activity will have a 7 a.m. start. Contact Bruce Carl at 717-368-4824 or hrdabrd@gmail.com.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, the venue will be Noel Dorwart Park, 408 Parklawn Court, Lancaster, in East Hempfield Township with a 7 a.m. start. Target birds are fall migrants. Contact Emily Broich at 717-333-9146 or emilybroich@gmail.com.

On Sept. 25, the activity will be the Ironville Community Park Raptor Watch starting at 9:30 a.m. Target species include broad-winged and sharp-shinned hawks, American kestrel, osprey, and bald eagle. The viewing area is level and comfortable. Folks may come and go as they please and may want to bring a chair and lunch. Restrooms and a pavilion are available.
