Despite Losses, Barons Posting Best Times

The Baron swimmers suffered a pair of setbacks, losing to Elizabethtown 130-20 in the boys' meet and 126-31 in girls' action.

Anderson Pilsner notched a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Gabrielle Fittery was the Barons' lone winner for the girls, winning the 200 freestyle. MaKenna Enck was third in the 100 backstroke.

Cocalico beat the Lady Barons 106-47 on Jan. 6. Fittery won the 200 free and 500 free. Enck was first in the 100 backstroke and second in the 50 free. Olivia Faulhaber was second in the 100 free and the 100 breaststroke.

In the boys 113-45 loss, Pilsner won the 100 back was second in the 200 IM. Bryce Garber gained a second place in the 50 Free and Colton Faulhaber was second in the 100 breaststroke.

"The E-town meet went well with some of our best times," Barons' coach Heather Fittery said. "They have a big team. (Cocalico) was a good meet. We had many of our best times."

Conestoga Valley earned a 109-45 win on the boys' side and the Lady Barons gave the CV girls a scare but lost, 74-65.

Central won the 200 medley relay (MaKenna Enck, Reagan Nissley, Chloe Enck, Faulhaber). Gabrielle Fittery won the 200 and 500 free. MaKenna Enck took first in the 100 back. Nissley won in the100 breaststroke. Chloe Enck finished second in the 50 free and Faulhaber was second in the 100 free.

On the boys' side, Pilsner was first in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly and Garber earned a pair of seconds in the 50 and 100 free. Third place winners included Ryan Moreno (100 backstroke), Caleb Bower (200 free), and Cayden Schwebel (100 breaststroke).

WRESTLING

Manheim cruised to a 48-21 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg last week. Securing falls for the Barons included freshman A.J. Hondru, in his first varsity match, at 152 pounds (first period fall), Ryland Fittery and Jake Hess. Rocco Daugherty earned a 5-2 decision at 189 and Braxton Keiffer won 7-0 at 120.

"We are competing in every position, every situation, from whistle to whistle," Barons' coach Robert Eno said. "We wrestled with patience and executed the game plans well. Every competition we continue to see progress. We're working hard and learning quickly."

The Barons lost to Ephrata 43-24. It was the first time the Mountaineers beat Manheim in more than 20 years. There were some bright spots. Rocco Daugherty, Fittery, and Braxton Keiffer came away with victories. Daugherty moved up a weight class and had a "phenomenal performance," Eno said.

"He was patient, yet explosive when he needed to be," he said. "And he recognized an opportunity to get bonus points for the team and he executed. He's a competitor and I enjoy seeing his progress."

Fittery, continues to show that he's a force at heavyweight.

"(It was) very methodical and overpowering," Eno said. "Dominant win against a stingy opponent. Eno said Keiffer executed his game plan well. He listened and followed through.

"We saw intentionality and focus," Eno said. "Just a clean performance from Braxton. We look forward to seeing him build on that and carry over into our next outing."

Barbush, who improved his record to 15-5 with a fall in 3:21 at 172 pounds. Keiffer, who also has a 15-5 record, trailed after the first period, but rallied to pin his opponent (2:18) in the 113 bout.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Paced by Maddie Knier, who scored a game-high 27 points, the Lady Barons cruised to 60-35 shellacking of Red Land on Jan. 10. Rachel Nolt nailed three 3-pointers and collected 15 points.

The Barons pulled out a 53-50 nail-bitter against Penn Manor on Jan. 12 at Doe Run Elementary. Knier had 31 points. Abbie Reed made both ends of a 1-and-1 down the stretch to win it.

"Huge moments where seniors Rachel Nolt and Paige Synder stepped up and made huge plays," Barons' coach Tyson Hayes said.

BOWLING

The Barons won 7-0 against Garden Spot on Jan. 6. Ethan Howard rolled a three-game 558, including a third game 193. Hailey Kowalski had 502 triple and Holly Hunt rolled a 155-143-157 for 455. Jesse Hurst rolled a 385 triple and Landen Statts had a three-game 468.

"They were hitting the pockets well and hitting strikes," Barons' coach Alan Slides said. "The second game they hit spares. That's a team (Garden Spot) that last year and the year before our kids win a game, but we would lose. This is the first year we dominated the scoring."

On Jan. 10, Manheim rolled to its sixth win this year, shutting out Lancaster Catholic, 7-0. Howard paced the Barons with a 685 triple. Statts was next with a 569 and Kowalski and Hurst rolled a 486 and 482, respectively.

"Overall, except for a couple of frames, they had a really good match," Slides said. "I am happy with how they did."

RIFLE

Central beat Wilson 495-484 on Jan. 6. Genna Eberly and Anna Haldeman each shot a perfect 100.

Ellie McCabe had a 99 and Trevor Frey and Kyria Martin each had 98.

"It was great to see the entire team shoot well," Barons' coach Steve Waddington said. "Two 100s and a 99 and everyone else came through with a 98. Hoping we can continue and add in some more 100s and 99s."

Manheim handed Conestoga Valley a 497-485 loss on Jan. 11. McCabe and Nathan Sauder scored 100's. Haldeman, Eberly and Gabrielle Fittery all chipped in with 99's.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

The Barons rallied for a 68-58 overtime victory over Octorara on Jan. 11. The Barons tied the Braves at 54 at the end of regulation.

Trey Grube paced Manheim with 21 points. Judd Novak scored most of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime and Collin Thompson added 14 points.

Central beat Red Land 60-39 behind Grube's 23 points. Thompson added nine.

Manheim started the week with a 66-55 triumph over Fleetwood. Thompson led the Barons with a career-high 23 points, including seven 3-pointers. Novak added 18 points.

"He got hot, and we found him," Barons' coach Charlie Fisher said about Thompson. "Defenses have to make a decision. They helped off and let Thompson open. He was 7-of-10 from 3-point range."

Central led 16-13 after the first quarter and 38-28 at halftime. Fleetwood cut the Barons' lead to only five after three quarters, but Manheim went up by 16 with about three minutes left to play.

"Fleetwood is a good team," Fisher said. "They were 7-0 going into the game. We wanted to control the tempo with what we did. We got the ball reversing and kept it moving. We played good team-ball."
