Dive Into Hydroponics

If you're interested in learning more about hydroponics, come to a program at the Manheim Community Library. The library will host a presentation on hydroponic gardening, spotlighting the gardens at Pleasant View Communities, on Monday, March 9. The presentation will be held at the library, 547 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

"The program will cover an introduction to hydroponics, the different systems, the hydroponics program at Hoffer Farm, our distribution outlets, how to get involved and the benefits of hydroponic gardening," shared Olivia St. Clair, farm manager of Hoffer Farm at Pleasant View.

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil, using water infused with nutrients. This approach can reduce water use by as much as 90% while promoting faster plant growth. It also allows farmers to produce crops such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and herbs year-round, in tighter spaces and without the need for pesticides.

Connie Kelly, assistant director of the library, noted that hosting a program like this one fulfills a community need.

"We've had some requests to add some agricultural programs to our offerings, and many people seem interested in this topic," Kelly said.

The program is open to people age 13 and older and will feature a PowerPoint presentation, a discussion of hydroponics and an opportunity for questions and answers.

"Our primary goal is always for an attendee to come with a sense of curiosity," Kelly said. "The hope is that they leave having enjoyed the program, having enjoyed themselves and learned something new in the process."

Registration is requested for the program. To register, visit https://manheimlibrary.org and click on the events calendar under the Programs/Events tab. Registration will be accepted up until the day of the program.
