Doctors advise that people avoid excessive heat. Such heat can cause several health problems, including heat exhaustion. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include profuse sweating, headache, dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps, and cool, moist skin.

A person who exhibits symptoms of heat exhaustion should be moved to a cooler location; have cool, wet cloths applied to the skin; and drink cool water. Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, so 911 should be called if the person vomits or refuses to drink.

There are ways to avoid heat-related illnesses, such as wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing made of breathable material, such as cotton; staying hydrated; avoiding strenuous outdoor activity; taking breaks in a cool place; and staying in an air-conditioned room or building, if possible.
