Domestic Violence Services Plans Events

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, October, Domestic Violence Services (DVS) of Lancaster will honor the resilience of domestic violence survivors and raise awareness by presenting various events with the theme "Survivor to 'Thriver': A Celebration of Resilience."

The Silent Witness Project will be displayed at various venues in Lancaster County in October. The project tells the stories of domestic violence homicide victims who lived in Lancaster County.

Health Care Cares About Domestic Violence Day will be Wednesday, Oct. 13. A Bakers Uprising Bake Sale will be held at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Oct. 17, from noon to 2 p.m. or while supplies last. Friday, Oct. 22, will be Wear Purple Day.

Kristin Manser, author of "The Invisible Bruise," will be featured in events on Monday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. at Ephrata Public Library and on Thursday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m. at Eastern Lancaster County Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland. Activities will also include a Purple Carnival at Millersville University on Tuesday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. and a DVS Speaking Witness virtual Survivor Speak-Out on Wednesday, Oct. 27.

Community members may also obtain DVAM yard signs to raise awareness. There are two designs from which to choose: "Home Is Not Safe for Everyone" or "Together We Can End Domestic Violence." Signs are in English on one side and Spanish on the other and are available for order at http://www.caplanc.org/dvam. There is no cost, although there is a suggested donation to offset printing costs.

Last year, DVS, a program of Community Action Partnership, served 1,788 local victims of domestic violence, including 132 children. During the pandemic, DVS has continued to serve victims through virtual counseling sessions, text hotline conversations, the renovation and reconfiguration of emergency safe house spaces to increase safety, and the launch of a new Economic Empowerment program.
