Driving for Drama will benefit theater booster club

You never know what you're going to see at the annual Driving for Drama Benefit Car Show. "It's open to any type of vehicle - cars, trucks, bikes, classics, modern, anything," said James "Boomer" Weaver, who is helping to organize the event with Dave Kinser, Shane Kinser and Tim Pentz.

The car show will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12, at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the show will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rain date will be Saturday, Aug. 19.

Proceeds from the show benefit the drama booster club at Columbia High School, and the show has been held on the school grounds for the past several years. "We ran out of room at the high school last year, and there was literally no room to park," Weaver said, noting that the show attracted close to 300 vehicles. The church property will offer more room for the vehicles and activities that accompany the show, he stated.

Trophies will be awarded for a variety of categories, including a 72-inch-tall Best of Show trophy. Winners in the major categories will be selected by professional judges, but students from the theater department at the high school will pick their favorites as well.

A drawing, door prizes and a Chinese auction will also be held, and music for the event will be provided by Music2dance2radio. A variety of food vendors will also be on-site.

Money raised from the show will help offset the costs of putting on theater productions at the high school, Dave said, noting that the theater department offers a fall play and a spring musical annually.

"(The car) show is always well attended," he noted. "We have a great turnout, and people have fun. Our trophies are unique as well - they have drama masks on them." Trophies will be sponsored by local businesses and individuals.

Weaver said he looks forward to the show every year because he especially enjoys interacting with the theater students and other young people who come to the event.

"I'll be out driving my car, and a kid will say, 'I like your car,' and I love that," he said, noting that he drives a 1997 Geo Prizm with lifted tires as well as a 1963 Bel Air, among other vehicles. "I'd much rather have a kid say that to me than an adult."

Show participants should enter the church at Anderson Ferry Road, and spectators should enter at Ore Mine Road. More information, including weather updates, may be found by searching for "Driving for Drama Benefit Car Show" on Facebook or calling 717-684-3600.
