Driving For Drama

For a chance to see some unique vehicles and support the theater department at Columbia High School, make plans to attend Driving For Drama. The car show will be held at the school, 901 Ironville Pike, on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, Aug. 14.

"The idea for this show came up a couple of years ago when the theater department was looking for fundraising ideas for the booster club," said Dave Kinser, who owns South 16th Street Garage in Columbia and is one of the event organizers. "We're all car guys, and we've been involved in car shows, so it was a natural fit." Joining Kinser in spearheading the event are James "Boomer" Weaver and Tim Pentz.

Driving For Drama is open to all types of vehicles. "There will be classic and antique cars, and last year, we had a vintage camper," Kinser noted. "We had 115 cars last year." The show will feature 40 trophies for categories including Best Paint, Best Engine and Director's Choice. A 72-inch-tall trophy will be presented to the Best of Show winner.

Along with cars, the event will feature food vendors, including Pennsylvania Farm Show milkshakes, Tanks Taters and more. Door prizes and giveaways will be offered, including tools, Snap-on Inc. merchandise and music lessons. Alison Liebgott of Miss Alison's Studio in Columbia will be on-site doing custom hand-painted pinstriping on cars. "Kids from the theater department will have a stand with activities, and members of the chorus will perform," Kinser noted.

Kinser has been involved in the theater program at Columbia High School for years. His three sons all participated in the program, and he has been set director for 26 shows. "Proceeds from the car show will be used for upgrades to equipment and to help with overall operating expenses of the theater program," he explained. Columbia High School's program presents a fall play and a spring musical annually.

The car show will be held in the west parking lot, near the football field. Spectators are asked to park in the east parking lot closest to Kinderhook Road. Registration for cars will be available on the day of the show, but preregistration is offered for a discount. Admission for spectators is free.
