ELANCO Library Plans Activities

The Eastern Lancaster County (ELANCO) Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, will offer events and programs to the community. Registration is not required unless noted. For details, visit http://www.elancolibrary.org or contact 717-354-0525 or adagostino@elancolibrary.org.

The library offers various activities regularly. In August, these will include Music and Movement, for children from birth to age 6 with a parent or caregiver, on Mondays at 10:30 a.m.; Readers' Roundtable Book Discussion on Monday, Aug. 4, at 2 p.m.; Hooks and Needles Yarn Craft Club, for people of all ages who knit or crochet, on Monday, Aug. 11, at 6:30 p.m.; and Lego Creation Club on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 6 p.m.

The library will also offer Preschool Storytime, for children ages 4 to 6, on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Toddler Thursdays, for children from birth to age 3, on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. The August theme will be "Transportation." Siblings are welcome to join.

The library's Summer Reading Program is open to people of all ages and will run through Saturday, Aug. 16. Reading logs may be picked up at the library, and the theme of this year's program is "Color Our World."

A Beginning Origami Workshop, taught by Kerrin Barelli, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. Participants will learn the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, using a single square of paper to create designs. No prior experience is required, and supplies will be provided. Attendees should bring a notebook for taking notes. The program is for people age 16 and older.

Lancaster County Parks and Recreation will present "Trash to Treasure" on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. Attendees will learn about local waterways and watersheds while using glass waste found in waterways to create a water glass hanging. The program is designed for teens and tweens.

Lancaster County Parks and Recreation will also present "Glitter Critters" on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. Attendees will learn about animals that shimmer and sparkle while looking at pictures and preserved specimens. They may paint a beetle picture using natural mica glitter. The program is designed for children ages 6 to 10, but all are welcome.

Allen Wessel will present "Social Security: Your Questions Answered" on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m. He will discuss how Social Security fits into a retirement income plan, when to start taking benefits, and tax considerations. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation.

Dementia educator and consultant Janie Martin from ForgeWorks will host "A Trip to the Seaside": A Summer Book Club for Adults Experiencing Dementia or Other Brain Changes on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m. This monthly book club allows people with dementia to enjoy reading while forming social connections. "A Trip to the Seaside," written by Kate Chesters, is a book designed for adults with brain changes.
