Elverson author publishes book

Brookline Books recently announced the publication of "Tinicum & Eastwick: Environmental Justice and Racial Injustice in Southwest Philadelphia," authored by Will Caverly.

In the 1950s, city planners eager to change the face of Philadelphia had designs on the city's southwest. They planned to raze the integrated neighborhood of Eastwick and level the ecologically valuable Tinicum marshlands to make room for a new "city within a city."

Caverly's book follows two grassroots movements resisting the project: one an environmentally conscious group of socialites, the other being the integrated, working-class residents of Eastwick desperately trying to save their homes. Through oral history and research, "Tinicum & Eastwick" documents one of the state's greatest environmental triumphs.

Caverly writes about history and the outdoors from his home in Elverson, where he lives with his family. His work has been featured in Commonweal Magazine, Backcountry Journal and Bee Culture. He is also author of "Here, The Bees Sting," a beekeeping thriller.
