Ephrata Cloister Chorus to perform

The Ephrata Cloister Chorus will present its spring concert on Saturday, May 4, at 3 p.m. at the Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata. The concert will take place in the historic 1741 Saal (Meetinghouse).

As a special program of the Ephrata Cloister Associates, the Ephrata Cloister Chorus seeks to compare the original choral compositions of the 18th-century community that was the Ephrata Cloister. The chorus is directed by Mark Herr and accompanied by Juliet Mitton.

In the upcoming concert, the chorus will perform three original Ephrata pieces in a space where these tunes would have historically been heard by visitors and members. This concert will also feature music of other early American communities, such as the Shakers, the First New England School, and African Americans. The chorus will also present current and classical tunes by composers such as Gabriel Faure, Franz Schubert, Roy Hopp, and Joseph M. Martin.

Admission is free. A freewill offering will be received during the performance. Seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tours of the Cloister will take place at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m.; regular admission rates apply.
