Event To Address Gun Violence

The Diocese of Central Pennsylvania's Diocesan Ministry to End Gun Violence will hold a community event on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will be hosted at St. Edward's Episcopal Church, 2453 Harrisburg Pike, Landisville.

Several activities and organizations will be included. Swords to Plowshares Northeast will feature retired bishop Jim Curry bringing his forge for a demonstration of converting guns into garden tools. To learn more, visit http://www.s2pnortheast.org.

Heeding God's Call to End Gun Violence will host "Memorial to the Lost," an installation of remembrance for Lancaster County victims of gun homicide. For details, visit http://www.heedinggodscall.org.

Sgt. Matt Miller, firearms instructor from the East Hempfield Township Police Department, will provide information about gun safety, and Samaritan Counseling Center will provide mental health resources. Information about the counseling center is available at http://www.scclanc.org.

The Peace Can Grow area will offer children's arts and crafts. Children may paint their own flowerpot, participate in a painted rock craft, or lend their artistry to the Peace Wall.

The event will feature an ecumenical and interfaith gathering of area congregations coming together, as communities of faith, with pastors and chaplains available for one-on-one conversation and support. A communal prayer service will complete the morning with a gathering in the St. Edward's sanctuary. Refreshments will be available throughout the morning.
