Event to focus on literacy

A Right to Read event will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Lebanon Junior High School, 1100 S. Eighth St., Lebanon, in the large group instruction room. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.; the event will take place from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m.

The event is being sponsored by the Lebanon School District in cooperation with the Lebanon County NAACP Branch 26AA-B.

The Right to Read is an initiative being promoted by the National NAACP and is being supported by the local branch. There will be a screening of "The Right to Read" documentary with interspersed small group discussion questions. The documentary tells the story of the literacy crisis in America and what can be done about it.

The event is open to parents, community members and school staff, and attendees must be age 18 or older.

The screening goals are to instruct audiences about research-based approaches to literacy, increase awareness about the literacy crisis in the United States and to inspire audiences to take local action and support students' and teachers' access to effective literacy instruction and training.
