Events Added To Parkesburg Sesquicentennial Celebration

Planning continues for the Parkesburg Sesquicentennial Celebration, set for Friday to Sunday, May 20 to 22. The event will include a parade through the borough, live entertainment, food and activities in Minch Park, including fireworks.

The anniversary planning committee recently announced the addition of several events that will be held as part of the celebration, including a May Food Festival.

As part of the monthlong food festival, participants are asked to eat at five different Parkesburg-area restaurants during the month of May and have their "Dine-Around Cards" stamped. The cards are available at participating restaurants, as well as Parkesburg Borough Hall, 315 W. First Ave., Building 1, and the Parkesburg Library, 105 West St. The card is also available for downloading at http://www.parkesburg.org.

Completed "Dine-Around Cards" can be dropped off at the Borough Hall by Friday, June 3, to be entered into a prize drawing. Participating restaurants include A.J. Christopher Mexican Restaurant, 5626 W. Lincoln Highway, Parkesburg; Chili's Grill and Bar, 770 Commons Drive, Parkesburg; Dyers Deli and Dairy Delight, 5739 W. Lincoln Highway, Parkesburg; El Limon, 402 W. First Ave., Parkesburg; Nova's Pasta and Pizza, 428 W. First Ave., Parkesburg; PJ's Deli, 1992 Valley Road, Pomeroy; Rocco and Anna's Ristorante Italiano, 302 Main St., Parkesburg; Stottsville Inn, 3512 Strasburg Road, Coatesville; and Victory Brewing Company, 3127 Lower Valley Road, Parkesburg.

The committee also announced that the Parkesburg Centennial time capsule will be opened at 1 p.m. on May 22 at Minch Park at the Sesquicentennial's closing ceremony. The unearthed time capsule will be officially revealed, showcasing contents that were packed and buried in 1972. In addition, the Parkesburg Sesquicentennial time capsule will be buried in a secret location following Sesquicentennial weekend. Those who attend the closing ceremony on May 22 will learn what items will be included in the time capsule.

Finally, a Children's History Carnival will take place on Saturday, May 21, at Minch Park. The carnival will illustrate what life was life for children who grew up during the Colonial time period through presentations, crafts, toy exploration and food. The Chester County History Center, Octorara Area Junior-Senior High School (OAHS) students and Lenape descendant Barry Lee will assist with the one-hour programs set for 10 and 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

In addition, the Civil War Regiment will conduct "Enlist Your Kid" military training sessions at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. as part of the living history encampment taking place at the park.

The day's festivities will also include hayrides, historic trolley rides, train rides, food, musical entertainment, OAHS displays and exhibits, history displays, antique cars, carriages and farm equipment.
