Events to feature local author

Local author Shirley Coulter Ericson will be featured at upcoming events highlighting her new book, "Sophie's Gifts."

An outdoor event will take place on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at 706 Zurich Drive, Hummelstown. The event, for people of all ages, will kick off with a short reading by the author at 7 p.m., followed by a book scavenger hunt designed for older children. The event will include a question-and-answer time as well. Attendees may also visit the author's fairy garden, which will be decorated for summer.

Book signings will be held at Barnes & Noble, 1700 H Fruitville Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, Aug. 24, from noon to 3 p.m. and the Lebanon Community Library, 125 N. Seventh St., Lebanon, on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

"Sophie's Gifts" is geared to 9- to 14-year-old readers, but it may also appeal to adults. Set in Maine in 1933, the story is not just about a struggle for social justice; it is also a journey featuring suspense, life lessons, and humor. The book includes elements of historical fiction.

"Sophie's Gifts" is available in hardcover, paperback, and ebook formats, and an audiobook will be available in the late fall. Copies of the books may be purchased online from Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and the iTunes Store. Copies will also be available to purchase using cash or a major credit card at the author's upcoming events. Copies of the book are available to borrow from the Lebanon Community Library, William H. & Marion C. Alexander Family Library in Hummelstown, and Hershey Public Library.
