Farmers Market To Open May 21

The Birdsboro Farmers Market, which offers homemade baked goods, fresh produce, coffee, herbal products, locally sourced honey, artwork, crafts and more, will open for its second season on Saturday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Main Bird Park, located at 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro.

The outdoor market will be offered every other Saturday through October by the Birdsboro Parks and Recreation Department. In addition to vendors, children's activities and musical entertainment are planned for the season.

For opening day, Threefold Blessing will perform, and local author Steve Dragon will be on hand to offer story time for children. Dragon, a firefighter and the public information officer for the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department, is the author of two children's books, "Were You Born a Dragon?" and "Were You Born a Dragon Too?"

Board member Christen Thompson noted that the market will have returning vendors, as well as new ones. "We have a new beef jerky vendor coming this year. He also makes barbecue sauce," she said, noting that another new vendor this year will be Blue Kraken BBQ. "We have a winery, Hopewell Flower Farm and (a vendor offering) homemade dog treats. We also have a lot of crafters. Hopefully, it will be a great season again."

A complete list of returning vendors and new vendors can be found at http://www.facebook.com/BirdsboroFarmersMarket by choosing Events and then "Opening Day!"

A celebration by the Birdsboro American Legion will be featured at the market on Saturday, July 30. "Each week, we will try to have something new and a different theme," said Thompson. "In July, we are teaming up with the American Legion, which is celebrating their 100th anniversary in July. They will have a dunk tank and games for kids."

"We're hoping to (offer) cooking classes - teaching people how to use the produce they get at the market," she added.

All local crafters and small businesses are invited to set up a booth at the farmers market; it is not necessary to be a resident of Birdsboro to participate. Those interested in selling items are asked to complete a vendor application.

"We are looking for producers. (All items sold have) to be locally sourced," Thompson pointed out. A link to the vendor application is available on the previously mentioned Facebook page.

After opening day, the Birdsboro Farmers Market will be open on June 4 and 18; July 2, 16 and 30; Aug. 13 and 27; Sept. 10 and 24; and Oct. 8.
