Farming, pest management workshops set

Penn State Extension and Penn State Law will host a Beginning Farmer Intensive: Land, Law, and Transition workshop on Friday, March 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 9, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Inn at Leola Village, 38 Deborah Drive, Leola.

The event is geared toward farmers who have operated a farm business for 10 years or less, beginning farmers transitioning into the ownership or management of an existing family farm business, and those considering starting a farm business. Speakers from Horizon Farm Credit, Pennsylvania Farm Link, and the Center for Dairy Excellence will share how to locate farmland, the legal and business expertise needed to transfer land and farm assets efficiently, the different types of business structures and what might work best for an individual's situation, how farm taxes are handled, and how to prepare for retirement while also starting or continuing an existing farm business.

The fee includes lodging on March 8 and breakfast and lunch on March 9. This workshop is supported by the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program, administered by the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Space is limited, and preregistration is required by Friday, March 1, by visiting http://extension.psu.edu/beginning-farmer-intensive-land-law-and-transition or calling 877-345-0691 on Mondays through Fridays from 8 am to 5 p.m. People with disabilities may call the same number to request accommodations.

Penn State Extension will also host a Professional Pest Managers School on Tuesday, March 12, from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at Shady Maple, 1324 Main St., East Earl.

The Professional Pest Managers School is designed to provide licensed applicators a cost-effective way of obtaining numerous pesticide applicator re-certification credits. This in-person, research-based educational program provides updates on pesticide safety and ornamental and turfgrass pests, including classes in turf, landscape, pond maintenance, right-of-way, nursery, and invertebrate pest management, as well as continuing education credits for certified arborists, Pennsylvania certified horticulturists, and Pennsylvania registered landscape architects.
