Father-daughter team creates children's book together

There are so many meaningful things that a father and daughter can do together. Collaborating on a book is one of them.

That's precisely what Corey Fogleman and his daughter Piper did, and the result of their collective talents is the children's book "Market Day: A Lancaster County Poem." Corey is the poem's author, and Piper is the book's illustrator.

"It is a dream come true," said Corey, a family physician who lives in Manheim Township. "To be able to partner with your child and give her responsibility, it's meant a lot to me. It's been an opportunity to see her grow up. It was a great project for both of us. I'm hoping we will be able to look back on other things we did together."

"I thought it turned out well, a lot better than we expected," said Piper, a freshman at Manheim Township High School. "Everything just works out really well together. It captures everything that makes Lancaster so great. It introduces everything that Lancaster has to offer."

Corey's poem is 18 stanzas in length, and each stanza has a corresponding illustration from Piper. Among the illustrations are Piper's depictions of Lancaster County destinations like the National Watch and Clock Museum, Long's Park, Central Market, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania and Musser Park, sites that occupy sentimental places in the Foglemans' hearts.

"Our children were very young when we moved to Lancaster in 2010," said Corey. "We started exploring the area, and we kind of fell in love with the area. That's what I wanted to celebrate in the poem. I wrote the poem for my kids, so they will remember all the cool things to do in Lancaster."

Originally, Corey had approached an artist about providing the accompanying illustrations for his poem, but when she was unable to do it, Piper stepped up and said, "I can do this."

"I think, in a way, it brought us closer," said Piper. "We put an idea together and made something great."

"We've never done anything like this before," said Corey. "Piper is kind of coming into her own as an artist. She can see things through 'til the end. I was worried it would be a lot of pressure for her."

The Foglemans self-published "Market Day: A Lancaster County Poem" and then distributed it to several area bookstores and a few local visitor's centers. They are currently working their way through their second shipment of books.

Corey and Piper mutually decided to give all profits from the sale of the book away and have already donated a few hundred dollars to a handful of local nonprofits.

"As a physician and a parent who enjoys poetry and creating things, there was a part of me that wondered if I would be able to keep doing things like this," said Corey. "I want to inspire kids to keep doing things they enjoy, even if it's not part of their jobs. If you want to do something well, do something you love."
