"Fill The Truck" To Benefit Refugees, Military

The Manheim Township Police Department (MTPD) will join forces with Wayne's Towing for a "Fill the Truck" event in an effort to provide aid to Ukrainian refugees and active-duty military members. The event will take place on Saturday, April 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Wayne's Towing, 5199 Main St., East Petersburg.

Local residents and community members are encouraged to bring donations during the event. Manheim Township Police will be on hand for a meet-and-greet and to help load donations into the truck. Hot dogs and light refreshments will be provided.

Humanitarian aid items that will be accepted include diapers of all sizes; wet baby wipes; all types of baby food and dry food; hygiene items for adults, kids, and babies; new underwear and socks for men, women, and children; baby diaper rash cream; bandages; all types of baby swaddles; mouthpieces for CPR; and medicine for adults and children, such as diarrhea medicine, Tylenol, ibuprofen, eye drops, ear drops, allergy medicine, hydrocortisone cream, gauze pads, aspirin, and antibacterial ointment.

In addition, MTPD officers are encouraging other local law enforcement agencies to donate military items at the event or by making other arrangements to donate. The West Hempfield Police Department has donated 11 used ballistic vests. Military items sought include two-way radios, Emergency Trauma Kit GEN-II and other emergency trauma kits, North American Rescue HyFin Vent Chest Seals, knee protection pads, burn shields, tactical vests, binoculars, combat tourniquets, triple antibiotics, bulletproof vests level 4+, tactical gloves, tactical boots, and protein bars.

Two additional collection locations will be open from April 4 to Friday, April 15. Donations will be accepted at the MTPD, 1825 Municipal Drive, Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; the contact is Officer Michele Klinger at 717-569-6401, ext. 1584. They will also be accepted at Wayne's Towing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the contact is Kimberly McDade at 717-581-5151.

Klinger, an 18-year veteran of the MTPD, worked alongside McDade to organize the event and worked in contact with officials of the Saint Andrew Ukrainian Catholic Church. All donations will be given to the church to facilitate delivery.
