First Friday event to celebrate Black History Month

The Arts at Millersville University will join Lancaster city's First Friday celebrations with We the People First Friday on Feb. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The free event will celebrate Black History Month, February, by featuring a performance that honors black history and an exhibit that reflects upon the present and future of black activism in Lancaster.

The performance, "Lift Ev'ry Voice," will begin at 7 p.m. in Steinman Hall. Servant Stage will present a collaborative performance that celebrates black history in America, scripted by Reji Woods from historical speeches, along with music and letters. The production is directed by Kylie Jo Smith.

In the Regitz Gallery, a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. will celebrate the opening of Sir Dominique Jordan's exhibit, "Woke Up, Had to Get the Blockrite." Identifying as an "Artivist," Jordan seeks to challenge people to make a difference in their community and is the leader of a social enterprise dedicated to youth mentorship through the lens of creative expression. As part of the PACE Neighbors program, this exhibit is part of the NEA Our Town project led by the City of Lancaster, in partnership with Franklin & Marshall College.

The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
