Food For Thought Forum Scheduled

On Wednesday, April 27, Hourglass will present "Food for Thought," a community forum connecting the dots between what people put on their plates and resilient communities. The event will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and includes a beverage and food reception and program.

The program will feature keynote speaker George Steinmetz, a National Geographic explorer and photographer best known for his aerial photography, and several regional speakers and short videos on topics such as oyster reef restoration, food insecurity, vertical farming, agrobiodiversity, and more. There will be an option to continue the conversation after the event at C'est La Vie, 18 N. Market St., Lancaster.

Steinmetz will speak about his current project, Feed the Planet, an examination of how the world can meet the challenge of feeding humanity without putting more natural lands under the plow. This project seeks to show how food is produced so that people can make more informed decisions. Steinmetz has traveled the globe documenting food production, including farmers in Lancaster County.

Additional speakers include Joe Arthur, executive director of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; Mark Bryer, Chesapeake Bay program director at the Nature Conservancy; Chris Ballentine, community relations manager at Southern Market Center; Bill Spire of Crop One Vertical Farming; and Alex Wenger, farmer at the Field's Edge Research Farm. A special video debut will highlight the work of community changemakers Hawa Lassanah, Shauna Yorty, and Zeshan Ismat.
