Framed - Warwick Band Show Spotlights Pictures

Weekdays from Aug. 1 through 4 from 2 to 9 p.m., the nearly 85 members of the Warwick High School (WHS) marching band focused not on the heat, but on "Pictures Reframed" as they practiced the show based on "Pictures at an Exhibition," originally an orchestral piece.

WHS band director Matthew Tenaglia explained that the show is in three movements - an opener, a ballad, and a closer. "'Pictures at an Exhibition' is a major symphonic work, but we are modernizing it by adding a marching band flair," he said, noting that the drill is based on a play on words, with marchers forming boxes on the field. "(The show) will be very linear based," he said, adding that band members will be creating pictures inside the boxes. He stated that the music is more loud and aggressive than pieces the band has used previously. The show will highlight the work of specific band members in a woodwind feature, a brass feature, and two drum breaks. The 10 color guards will spin 6-foot flags during the drill.

Drum major Hayden Milchanowski said that the "coolest thing" about the show is the music, which he enjoys more as a conductor than as a musician. "I am hearing it from a listening perspective," said Milchanowski, who added that he is challenged by remembering all the measures and set numbers.

Band members have responded to the music with enthusiasm. Woodwind captain Maggie Turner noted that it has been fun to turn a recognizable classical piece into a marching band tune. Fellow woodwind captain Jack Haught said that the music will have "pizzazz." "What we're doing with the marching music will jazz it up a bit," said Turner.

Turner pointed out that the drill is challenging because the boxes have to be created precisely to look right. "It's easy to find where you're supposed to be but hard to execute it perfectly," she said. Tenaglia noted that there will be no props involved in the drill.

Learning drill and music was not the only focus of the band camp. "We have fun spirit days to keep everybody energized," said Turner. Monday was tie dye day. Tuesday was sports day, and Wednesday was crazy sock day. Thursday was mismatch day.

Tenaglia described a special competition between band sections involving an old band shoe. "At the end, the section that shows the most spirit and participates wins the Golden Dinkle," he said. "It's the most coveted award."

Milchanowski noted that fellowship among members in a highlight of camp. "Band camp is a good way to build friendships and community - all with the same goal," he said.

The group will be on the competition circuit with Cavalcade of Bands. This year's schedule will take the band to Hempfield, Conrad Weiser, Wilson, Manheim Central, Conestoga in Berwyn, and Boyertown, and the band will host a show on Saturday, Oct. 1. Cavalcade will hold a competition in Hershey on Saturday, Nov. 12.
