Fun and safe

First Trunk or Treat planned for township

"I have been wanting to do this for five years," said Kim Skethway, part-time groundskeeper and event coordinator for Paradise Township, of the first Trunk or Treat event planned for Paradise Park. "It's something safe for the kids."

A successful community picnic in August that featured a chicken barbecue and a record attendance spurred Paradise Township manager David Thompson to join forces with Skethway to organize a Trunk or Treat to be held in the park, 6 London Vale Road, Paradise, on Friday, Oct. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. for children age 12 and under. Attending families are encouraged to wear costumes.

According to event planners, about 16 community organizations and businesses have agreed to take part, but more are welcome to join in the fun. Among the organizations that will bring vehicles and hand out candy will be the new Pequea Valley Fire Department (PVFD), which represents a merger of the Gordonville and Kinzer fire companies and the Paradise Fire Company. PVFD captain Dave Johnson said it is an opportunity to meet the community. The Paradise Township Lions Club will bring a trailer, and the Rotary Club of Paradise, Keystone Church, and Leacock Presbyterian Church will participate as well.

"It made sense to invite business partners that donate time, energy, and money to the park," said Thompson, who mentioned Graybill's Plumbing and the Bank of Bird-in-Hand. Amanda Hall with the Bank of Bird-in-Hand said the bank will bring its mobile unit. "It's a 34-foot, fully equipped recreational vehicle," said Hall, who noted the bank on wheels can provide all the same services as a branch bank.

The Paradise Park Foundation will provide free coffee and hot chocolate, along with hot dogs and pretzels, and Pastry Paradise will bring mini cupcakes to distribute.

Skethway noted that she would like to see the event grow in subsequent years. "We are hoping it will be even bigger," said Skethway, who would like to add contests and pumpkin painting to the event.

"This is a great opportunity for the community to come together," stated Thompson. "We have so many great organizations and business partners and a great park with facilities (to hold it in)."

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held rain or shine. "If it rains, it will be at the community building (in the park)," said Thompson. Readers with specific questions about the event may call 717-768-8222.
