Fundraiser will benefit local nonprofits, animal rescue

Geneva Bakery, 6030 Lemon St., East Petersburg, will host a fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 17, to benefit multiple local nonprofit organizations. From 3 to 8 p.m., the bakery will sell a variety of desserts and the benefiting groups will offer children's activities and information to visitors.

The bakery will highlight the Organization for the Responsible Care of Animals (ORCA) during the fundraiser. ORCA seeks to rescue and rehabilitate animals that are in distress throughout Lancaster County. Although the organization cannot keep wild animals, it assists with transporting them to wildlife centers. More details about ORCA are available at http://www.orcarescue.org.

From 5 to 8 p.m., representatives from Hempfield Power Packs will offer demonstrations and giveaways to the fundraiser's participants. Hempfield Power Packs supplies 160 families in the Hempfield School District with meals on a weekly basis, and it prepares low-cost meals for children on weekends. During the event, Geneva Bakery will offer a dessert buffet by donation. All proceeds from the buffet will support Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in Washington Boro. The wildlife rescue will also operate stations in rooms throughout the building, and each station will offer crafts, owl pellet dissections and other activities. Visitors will also have an opportunity to meet some of Raven Ridge's animal ambassadors: wild animals such as vultures, snakes and turtles that are unable to be released into the wild. If the animals have the right temperament, they are trained to interact with the public and spread awareness of the organization's work in the community. Linda Rannels, owner of Geneva Bakery, frequently partners with Raven Ridge for fundraising events. Linda's daughter, Libby, has worked as a volunteer with the wildlife rescue for seven years. Raven Ridge rescues and rehabilitates sick or injured wild animals found throughout the community. Once the animals have recovered, the organization releases them back into the wild. Raven Ridge partners with organizations such as ORCA to locate and transport the injured wildlife to its facility. "We know how much good work they do in the community," Linda said. "We try to help out wherever we can." On International Vulture Day in September, Geneva Bakery made a unique vulture-themed candy to raise money for Raven Ridge. This is the third year Geneva Bakery has coordinated the annual fundraiser as as part of the ExtraGive program.
