Garden Spot concludes indoor track season

Garden Spot's winter track club team completed its 2024 season on Feb. 17. Unlike the spring outdoor season of dual meets between two Lancaster-Lebanon League schools, the indoor season features invitationals hosted at colleges, including Alvernia University, Franklin & Marshall College, Bucknell University, Dickinson College, and Lehigh University. Typically, 20 or more high school teams compete at an invitational, including schools outside of Pennsylvania.

Although invitationals are held at indoor track venues, Garden Spot's athletes practice at their outdoor track. The team was led by coaches Devon Lewis, Traci Tempone, Trevor Lehman, Doug Lewis, and Sydney Fitzwater. The team includes both middle school and high school students; however, only high school athletes may compete at invitationals.

The Garden Spot athletes competed at seven invitationals this season and set various personal records (PRs). Among these, Wynne Kelly and Maggie Martin threw shot put personal records of 24-11 3/4 inches and 25 5, respectively.

High jump competitors set PRs as well, with Megan Hechler jumping 4 8 and Franchesca Severino jumping 4 10. Boys' jumping events were led by Jaden Rodriguez recording a 5 10 in high jump, 18-5 1/2 in long jump, and 35 6 in triple jump. Andrew Pemberton registered a 20-11 3/4 long jump PR, and Liam Ray had a 5 6 high jump PR.

The girls' distance PRs were earned by Ali Sensenig with 2 minutes, 55.45 seconds in the 800-meter and 6:43.16 in the 1,600-meter events, and Elise Krock running a 2:35.72 in the 800. Leading the boys' distance runners, Gavin Reimers recorded PRs of 2:17.57 in the 800, 4:53.09 in the 1,600, 4:47.67 in the 1 mile, and 9:40.31 in the 3,000-meter. Also competing in the 800 were Josiah Durling, 2:36.03, and Judah Stauffer, 2:35.52. In the 1,600, Durling registered 5:58.22 and Jude Kauffman recorded 5:26.04.

The team had a strong sprint division. Competing in hurdles were Hechler, Camryn Waltman, Sean Sexton, and JJ Waltman. Hechler earned PRs in the 55-meter hurdles with 9.63 seconds and the 60-meter hurdles with 9.86. In the 60, Camryn Waltman achieved a 10.30 PR. For the boys, Sexton recorded a 11.67 PR, and JJ Waltman achieved a 9.01 PR.

Andrew Pemberton earned a 6.99 PR in the 55-meter dash. Sixty-meter dash athletes included Roxanne Avril, 9.44; Katelyn Davis, 8.54; Filippo Burani, 7.74; Pemberton, 7.44; Sexton, 8.84; and JJ Waltman, 7.41. 200-meter competitors recorded the following PRs: Avril, 31.89; Kailyn Miller, 29.02; Camryn Waltman, 30.01; Burani, 26.75; and Pemberton, 24.59. The girls' 400-meter sprinters earned PRs, including Hechler, 1:04.21; Miller, 1:07.73; and Severino, 1:16.04. The boys' PRs in the 400 were registered by Ray, 1:00.27, and Sexton, 1:04.04.

Practicing in the winter elements and competing in day-long invitationals paid off for a few athletes as they qualified for the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association (PTFCA) Indoor Track Carnival at Lehigh University. Meeting the qualification standards were Hechler and JJ Waltman for the 60-meter hurdles, Reimers in the 3,000, Rodriguez in high jump, and Pemberton in long jump.

The indoor track team's sponsors this season were E-Bike Guys of PA, Garden Spot Dental Care, Hershey Surveying, Kreider's Canvas Service, Lehman Illustrations, Lickity Split, New Holland Shell, Orrstown Bank, Town and Country Electrical, AdamSoldMyHouse Realtor and Eby's Store.
