GEARS Announces Programs

Genealogy for Beginners, open to people age 18 and up, will be offered on Mondays, Sept. 19 to Oct. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, will provide information to help people get started researching their family history or continue a project they have already started. Topics will include subscription services, how to use Ancestry.com and how to find obituaries. Participants will also receive specific advice from the instructor and a copy of the PowerPoint presentation for each topic. The presenter, Katherine Pennavaria, is a college professor and librarian with many years of experience doing genealogy research and presentations. Participants should bring a flash drive and a notebook. A laptop is recommended.

One-hour guided trail rides will be available at Ironstone Ranch, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, on Wednesdays, Sept. 7, Sept. 21, Oct. 5 and Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. as well as on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 4:45 p.m. The horses have been trained to work with riders who have little or no experience. There will be no trotting or galloping. All children must be age 8 or older, and there is a strict weight limit of 225 pounds.

A program on identity theft will be presented by M&T Bank. The class, for people age 18 and up, will be offered on Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St. Topics will be how to identify the signs of identity theft and fraud, different types of identity theft and fraud, strategies to protect yourself from identity theft and fraud, and how to protect your data using safe habits. The class is free, but preregistration is required.

GEARS will host an AARP Driver Safety Refresher Program for people age 50 and up who have previously taken the eight-hour 55 Alive course. This course will fulfill requirements for a continuing insurance discount from any auto insurer doing business in Pennsylvania. All participants must bring evidence of previous course completion to receive a certificate. Participants must also bring a valid Pennsylvania driver's license. The class will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, 70 S. Poplar St. Registration is required. Separate fees have been set for AARP members and for nonmembers.

GEARS will offer tennis lessons for children ages 7 to 14 this fall. All classes will meet on Tuesdays, Sept. 27 to Oct. 18, at the tennis courts at Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. A beginner class will be available from 6 to 6:50 p.m., followed by an intermediate class from 7 to 8 p.m. for players who have completed two or more sessions of beginner tennis lessons.
