GEARS plans activities

GEARS will offer several recreational programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for GEARS members. To register or for more information, visit http://www.getintogears.org or call GEARS at 717-367-0355.

People age 14 and up may attend Cycle Strong on Saturdays, Sept. 16 to Dec. 23, from 8 to 8:45 a.m. at the Community Place on Washington, 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. There will be no class on Oct. 7. Attendees should bring water and a towel, as well as two small hand weights if they would like to add upper-body strength work.

A representative of M&T Bank will present a retirement workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. Attendees will examine the factors to consider when planning retirement, learn to estimate their retirement expenses, identify saving and planning strategies that may allow them to maximize their savings at any age, compare the types of retirement plans available to them, and set goals for their retirement savings. The class is free and open to people age 18 and up. Preregistration is required.

GEARS will provide an introduction to Medicare on Thursday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the senior center, 70 S. Poplar St. The class is designed for people who will soon turn 65. The basics of Medicare will be explained, including how and when to sign up for Medicare, what is covered by the different parts of Medicare (A, B, C, and D), and the differences between a Medicare Supplemental (Medigap) and a Medicare Advantage plan. Additionally, attendees will learn how to find a plan that best fits their needs.

GEARS will offer a wide variety of fitness classes starting in September. Classes range from yoga to spin to HIIT workouts. People may register for one program, or they can sign up for multiple programs with discounts. A fitness punch card for 10 classes is available for a fee. DIY Wreath Workshops will offer people age 18 and up the opportunity to make a Halloween wreath on Tuesday, Sept. 26; a Thanksgiving/fall wreath on Tuesday, Nov. 7; and a holiday card holder/winter wreath on Tuesday, Nov. 28. All workshops will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Winters Heritage House, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown, and all materials will be provided. Individuals may attend one or more of the workshops.

A trip to New York City to see "Aladdin" on Broadway will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, with a 6:15 a.m. departure from the parking lot of Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E.
