Gravesite cleaning project planned

"Honoring Our Fallen," a gravesite maintenance event, will take place at Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, on Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Mount Bethel Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 683 veterans. While some of these graves do not have tombstones, the veterans' gravesites that do have markers will be the focus of the event, which is being planned by Ryan Sexton, Mount Bethel Cemetery's new superintendent.

Sexton invites the community and military veterans to assist. The goal of the project is to clean all of the veterans' headstones. No prior experience is necessary, and gloves and brushes will be provided.

In the event of rain, the event will take place the following weekend.

Mount Bethel Cemetery noted that Hinkle's Restaurant, Columbia Water Company, and D2 Biological Solutions donated to this event.
