Gretna Music plans concerts

Gretna Music will present a concert by jazz bass legend Buster Williams on Saturday, July 29, at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m. The next day, Sunday, July 30, kora player Sona Jobarteh will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Both events will take place in the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna.

Williams has played, recorded and collaborated with jazz giants such as Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, and Count Basie. This concert is presented in partnership with Central PA Friends of Jazz.

Jobarteh is known as the first professional female kora virtuoso to come from any of the West African Griot dynasties. The kora is a West African 21-stringed instrument with a sound resembling that of a harp, although when played in the traditional style, the kora bears resemblance to a guitar. Kora players have traditionally come from families of historians, genealogists and storytellers who pass on their skills to their descendants.

In addition, Gretna Music will host First Listen mini-concerts. These performances feature local youths and occur before the mainstage concerts, offering the opportunity for students to perform on stage and to interact with the professional musicians backstage. First Listen concerts are free and open to the public.

Performances will take place in the Mount Gretna Playhouse. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the young artists will perform at 6:45 p.m.

Pianist Christian Wienckoski will be featured before the Chanticleer concert on Sunday, July 23. Wienckoski is a classically trained pianist who has been playing and performing since the age of 6. At age 15, he started teaching his own piano students. He now studies with his uncle, Brian Farrell, who is a graduate of the Juilliard School.

Clarinetist Andre Hurst will perform before Jobarteh on July 30. Hurst is a rising senior at Hempfield High School, where he plays varsity tennis and is a member of the school's symphonic band. He has been playing the clarinet for eight years and has been accepted to All-State and All-East ensembles. He also enjoys playing in Nextgen's Allegretto Youth Orchestra. After high school, he plans to pursue a career in STEM.
