Hempfield Marching Knights' season of success

According to Hempfield High School's director of bands, Matthew Ceresini, the school's marching band program is modeled after the following quote: "Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming." Although the quote is from famous basketball coach John Wooden, the Marching Knights' accomplishments throughout this past season suggest that the idea does not only apply to the court.

"Following that model, we want students not to worry about what others are doing or are capable of, but instead focus on pushing yourself to the edge of your limits," Ceresini said. "If all 100 kids in the program do that, we're happy with the result."

On Oct. 10, the Hempfield marching band was invited to perform at the State Capitol in Harrisburg for the Department of Education's ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly remodeling building. Following an address from the governor and the secretary of education, the Marching Knights played the arrangement of songs used for games and school spirit events to excite the crowd. "It's always nice playing for a new audience. I'm not sure the (Department of Education's) hundreds of staff members even knew there was going to be music, but they were all singing and dancing along," said Ceresini.

Throughout the season, the members of the marching band worked hard to push the program to a level of success that had not been accomplished at Hempfield in nearly a decade. On Oct. 21, the Marching Knights traveled to the University of Maryland to compete in the Bands of America Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship. After all of the participating bands played in the morning, the top 12 groups were selected to perform again for the finals at the end of the competition. Hempfield's band qualified for finals for the first time since 2014 and finished in sixth place after the second performance.

"This year's group was great at working hard and giving effort no matter if they were experiencing success or failure," Ceresini said. "The kids were committed to trusting they were going to get where they needed to. Even if something didn't go well, they got better quickly."

The season concluded with a performance at Warwick High School on Nov. 4. for the Cavalcade of Bands Championships. The Marching Knights presented their show "Mad Science" to earn a final score of 96.2 in the Yankee Open Class, the highest score achieved by Hempfield since 2019.

Ceresini credited a large part of this year's success to the marching band's strong student leadership, as well as the support of alumni, school administrators and parents. "We had some of the best role models in our student leadership program, and the level of support and encouragement the kids get from the community is phenomenal," said Ceresini.
