Hempfield UMC Slates Programs

Hempfield United Methodist Church (UMC), 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will offer a variety of programs this fall. To register for programs, visit http://www.hempfieldumc.org.

The Living With Cancer support group will meet on the second Wednesday of each month from September through May, beginning Sept. 14. Meetings will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the prayer room. The group, for people with active cancer or who are in remission, offers support and teaching on topics such as mindfulness, meditation, nutrition, wellness, journaling, spiritual matters, recurrence, and stress. The group is led by pastor Brenda Coffin, who is a cancer survivor, an ordained deacon and HUMC's minister of spiritual care. There is no cost, but registration is required.

Planning for What Comes Next will take place on Thursday, Sept. 15, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Spirit Cafe. Chad Habecker, funeral director with Sheetz Funeral Home in Mount Joy, will join Joyce Young, HUMC director of care, in presenting this session. Topics will include funeral planning in advance, insurance options, cremation, Veterans Affairs benefits, Social Security benefits, and advance care directives. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.

Self-Care for the Caregiver will be presented on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Spirit Cafe. Karen Stauffer, a community educator from Hospice & Community Care, will speak about why focusing on maintaining well-being when providing care for a loved one helps people to age well and live well. She will also share about the unique perspective and concerns of caregivers, how caregivers can focus on their own mental and physical health, and tips to help caregivers practice self-care and reduce stress. Stauffer spent over 30 years as a professional educator and over 24 years as a patient advocate and caregiver. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.

HUMC will hold an indoor yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds will go to Lancaster County Orphan Care Alliance, which supports foster and adoptive families and vulnerable children. The sale will be on a much smaller scale than in previous years. Items available for purchase this year will include children's clothing, kids' toys and games, baby items, household items, seasonal decorations, small electronics, sporting goods, tools, books, jewelry, collectibles and antiques, crafts, and stationery. The church will not sell furniture, clothing for adults, linens, large appliances, puzzles, textbooks or encyclopedias, treadmills, ellipticals or large exercise equipment, and stuffed animals.
