Hershey author to talk about Agatha Christie movies at library

Teresa Peschel, an author residing in Hershey, will present "13 Poirots and 7 Miss Marples" at Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Ave., Hershey, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024.

Peschel is the author of "Agatha Christie, She Watched: One Woman's Plot to Watch 201 Agatha Christie Movies Without Murdering the Director, Screenwriter, Cast, or Her Husband," published in April 2023. The 430-page, coffee table book shares Peschel's thoughts on the 201 movies and television episodes that between them feature all 13 actors who have played Agatha Christie's detective Hercule Poirot and the seven actresses who have played Miss Marple.

Peschel said it took her more than two years to watch and review all the movies and TV shows. "I used to be a purist about adaptations," she noted. "But scriptwriters can create a compelling movie from a short story, while a faithful adaptation can be very dull."

During the upcoming presentation, she will talk about the actors and play clips of their performances. When asked about her favorite Poirots and Marples, she answered, "David Suchet and Joan Hickson are the gold standards. But I loved Japanese actor Mansai Nomura. It was fascinating to see Poirot interpreted through the lens of another culture."

The event at Hershey Public Library is free. Reservations at http://www.hersheylibrary.org are suggested but not required.

"Agatha Christie, She Watched" is available at Cupboard Maker Books in Enola, Mechanicsburg Mystery Book Shop, and online bookstores.
