High school students recognized

Elizabethtown high school students were recently honored.

The Rotary Club Elizabethtown's Students of the Month for April were Olivia Nilsen and Derek Deardorff from Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS). This recognition is part of a program dedicated to celebrating student achievements, fostering a culture of learning, and highlighting the significant contributions students make to the high school community.

Olivia, daughter of Hyung Ku Nilsen and Amy Nilsen of Elizabethtown, holds leadership roles in Key Club, Model United Nations, the book club, the tennis team, the orchestra, and other groups. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Human Rights Club, and the pit orchestra. She received awards in Advanced Placement calculus. Beyond school, Olivia earned the Girl Scout Gold Award and participates in community volunteer activities. She is a member of the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren and participates in youth programs at Cross Roads Brethren in Christ Church. She plans to attend Penn State University to pursue a degree in biochemistry with the aim of attending dentistry school to become an orthodontist.

Derek, son of Shane and Mackenzie Deardorff of Elizabethtown, is the captain of the 2024 state champion bowling team and a member of the baseball team, the Student Welfare Agency Team, and Student Council. His performance in bowling earned him the title of two-time Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Star. In the community, he has served at Masonic Village. After graduating, Derek plans to enlist in the Air Force.

Jacob Miller is the Elizabethtown Lions Club CTC Student of the Month for April. Miller, a senior who hopes to become a trauma surgeon, is enrolled in the Advanced Health Careers program at the Lancaster County Career & Technical Center (LCCTC) campus in Mount Joy. In this program, he has experienced clinical rotations through various departments at both Lancaster General Hospital and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. Jacob is involved in Student Ambassadors and Skills USA at LCCTC, and he was slated to be inducted into the National Technical Honor Society - Mount Joy Chapter in May. He has been accepted to Lock Haven University, and he plans to study biochemistry and enter the pre-med track.  

The Elizabethtown Optimist Club has named Albert Domines as its Athlete of the Month for April. Albert, a senior, is a member of the boys' varsity baseball team at EAHS. Off the field, he participates in youth activities at his church. He plans to attend Lock Haven University to major in health and physical education.
