Hiking Club Plans Activities

York Hiking Club will host hikes on Sundays, April 11, 18 and 25. For additional details, readers may visit http://www.yorkhikingclub.com or the club's Facebook page. Participants should bring water and wear good walking shoes or hiking boots. Carpooling will not be provided by the hiking club. In the case of inclement weather, readers should contact the hike leader or check the club's Facebook page for cancellation information.

The April 11 outing will be an 11-mile loop hike beginning at the end of Quarry Gap Road off Route 233 in Caledonia State Park. The hike will include the Appalachian Trail, Quarry Gap Shelter, Milesburn Cabin, Rocky Knob Trail, Long Pine Run Reservoir, Greenwood Road, and Locust Gap Trail. There will be an optional stop after the hike at Thirsty Farmer Brew Works. Attendees should bring a lunch and snacks and meet at the Caledonia State Park visitor center in time to depart at 9 a.m. The hike leader, Gwen Loose, may be contacted at 717-891-9967 before 9 p.m.

On April 18, attendees will meet outside at John Paul Jones Cabin, 1145 Furnace Road, Airville, for a 1:30 p.m. hike. After looking at the wildflowers, participants will hike up to Urey Overlook to look for eagles. Participants may then choose to take a short hike or a longer hike. The minimum distance participants will hike is 3 miles. Masks are required when participants are gathered together, but are not required while social distancing during the hike. During a 6-mile hike on April 25, participants will hike up the Dragon Spine section of Mason-Dixon Trail and then head down rolling terrain to Green Branch Run and return. The rock scramble at the beginning and end is mildly challenging. There are two high lookout sections, as well as views of the Turkey Hill windmills and the Susquehanna River. Attendees should bring a lunch. The group will meet at Lock 2 Recreation Area, located at the first parking lot south of Shank's Mare Outfitters along the river.
