Hiking club posts activities

The club will hold its Labor Day picnic at the JPJ Cabin, 1145 Furnace Road, Airville, on Sunday, Sept. 3. A short hike will start at 10 a.m., and attendees are welcome to take a longer hike if they wish. Lunch will begin at 1:30 p.m. There is a nominal fee, with a discount for club members. A 3-mile hike will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, departing at 11 a.m. from the Lake Redman parking lot on Sparton Road off Hess Farm Road. Participants will walk around part of Lake Redman, passing through the bird sanctuary toward the end of the hike. The route has a few short, mild climbs. In the case of rain, those who plan to attend should call 717-650-0253 to find out if the event will take place. The hike leaders will be Kim Pavlick and Rafael Ruiz.

A long hike on the Appalachian Trail will be offered on Sunday, Sept. 17. Participants should meet at the Emigsville park and ride for a 7 a.m. shuttle. The hike will begin at the Eckville parking lot to Route 309, and sites of interest will include the Eckville and Allentown shelters, Dan's Pulpit and spring, Balanced Rocks and Tri-County Corner. There will be a break for lunch and an option for a longer hike. Attendees are advised to bring a lunch, snacks and plenty of water and to wear sturdy hiking shoes. The club will lead an 8.3-mile loop hike in Michaux State Forest on Sunday, Sept. 24. The loop will start at Pine Grove Furnace, proceed south to Tom's Run Shelter and return on the Sunset Rocks Trail. About half the hike will be on the Appalachian Trail and will include a mountaintop view, a section of two-handed rock scrambling, some short climbs and sections along mountain streams. Those who wish to participate should gather at Woodbury Road at 8:30 a.m. or at Pine Grove Furnace parking lot near the furnace stacks at 9:30 a.m., and they should bring a lunch. There is a fee.
