Hiking club posts activities

A 4.2-mile hike will take place on Sunday, April 7, along the Mason-Dixon Trail. This is a challenging hike with rock climbing, rebar, and rugged terrain. Participants will cross the inlet at the Susquehanna River, passing under the Norman Wood Bridge and along the canal and ending at the falls Mason-Dixon Trail parking area. They may walk an optional additional mile along the scenic Falls Creek area to the McCalls Ferry trail. Attendees should bring hiking boots and poles, water, and snacks. The group will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the falls parking area. A 3.5-mile loop hike by Lake Redman will be offered on Sunday, April 14. Attendees should meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Sparton Road parking area off Hess Farm Road. The hike will feature walking on trail 5, which has some small hills, muddy areas, and road crossings, and walking on the boardwalk at the bird sanctuary. Participants are advised to bring hiking boots and poles, water, and snacks. To learn more, contact Schwankl at the aforementioned number.

The club will hold a 3-mile hike and a picnic at Samuel S. Lewis State Park on Sunday, April 21. The hike will start at 1:30 p.m. from the picnic area at the back of the park. It will feature panoramic views of the Susquehanna River, High Point, Hellam Hills, and Rocky Ridge; the pine plantation and rock formations; and diverse hardwood forest. The trail could be muddy, so attendees should wear hiking boots. Hot dogs will be provided, and attendees are asked to bring a dish to share, along with their own utensils, plates, and beverages. A flower hike and covered dish meal will occur on Sunday, April 28. Attendees should meet at the JPJ Cabin, 1145 Furnace Road, Airville. The short hike by the Susquehanna River will start at 9 a.m.; participants will count and identify the wildflowers they see. Anyone wanting to go on a longer hike at 10:30 a.m. is welcome to do so. The meal will begin at 1:30 p.m. Those who plan to attend are asked to call Sarah Tateosian at 717-741-2652 to specify what dish they will bring.
