Hiking club posts events

A 6-mile hike will take place on Saturday, March 2. The group will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Park and Ride at the Emigsville exit of Route 83 or 9 a.m. at the Clark's Ferry Bridge. The purposes of this activity are to introduce attendees to the club's section of the Appalachian Trail on Peters Mountain and to inventory needed trail maintenance. Attendees should bring a mask to wear on the shuttle as well as loppers and a hand saw, if they have them, to do some light work on the trail. The Trails Committee will hold a meeting on Friday, March 8, for everyone who wants to do maintenance on either the Mason-Dixon Trail System or the Appalachian Trail. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Hooper farm, 309 Bank Hill Road, Wrightsville. For more details, contact Jim Hooper at j.e.hooper@ieee.org.

A 3-mile hike will be offered on Sunday, March 10. The group will meet at the Lake Redman parking lot on Sparton Road off Hess Farm Road at 11 a.m. After walking on the road for a short distance to connect with trail 5, participants will walk around part of Lake Redman, passing through the bird sanctuary. This hike has a few short, mild climbs. In the case of rain, attendees should confirm that the event will be held by calling Kim Pavlick and Rafael Ruiz at 717-650-0253.

A covered dish dinner and presentation will be held on Friday, March 15, at the York Township Park Building, 25 Oak St., from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Gwen Loose and Bernie Frick will share about their hiking trip to Wales with the Keystone Trail Association. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish to share.

The club will offer a hike on the Catoctin Mountain Extended Loop Trail near Thurmont, Md., on Sunday, March 17. The group will walk the entire trail, which is a challenging hike. Attendees should bring a lunch and water and wear sturdy hiking boots. Hiking poles are recommended. Attendees will meet at 8 a.m. at Catoctin Mountain Visitor Center. A 6.5-mile hike on the rail trail will occur on Saturday, March 23. Participants should meet at 9 a.m. at Indian Rock Elementary School, 1500 Indian Rock Dam Road, York. They will be shuttled to Glatfelter Station and from there will hike back to Indian Rock Dam. Participants are advised to bring a snack and water. No special hiking gear is required. A 3- or 4-mile, out-and-back hike will take place on Sunday, March 24, at Lake Williams. Attendees should meet at the Lake Williams and Lake Redman parking lot at 1:30 p.m. on South George Street. Hike leaders Allen and Lore Britton may be reached at 717-825-5552 or loralhiker@gmail.com.

The club will hold a 10-mile hike on the Mason-Dixon Trail along Muddy Creek north of Delta on March 24. Participants should meet at 7:30 a.m. at Leader Heights Eye Center, 309 Leader Heights Road, York. The hike is of moderate difficulty.
