Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Planned

The community is invited to celebrate the start of Hispanic Heritage Month and Welcoming Week at Second Friday Latino, presented by Latinos Unidos of York, York County Hispanic Coalition and the Appell Center for the Performing Arts. The festivities will take place on North George Street between Philadelphia Street and Clarke Avenue on Friday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 9 p.m.

A variety of free activities are planned for the event, including face painting. Local artisan vendors and food trucks will be available on the street, which will be closed to local traffic. Local band Los Monstros will perform music that is a blend of traditional Latin/Caribbean rhythms with contemporary styles.

The Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York, will host family activities in the Strand Theatre lobby, and guided tours of the performance spaces will be offered between 5 and 8 p.m.

Creative York will be on-site with an art activity and will also conduct gallery tours and a meet-and-greet with artist Rosa Luz Catterall - whose art is featured on the poster for this event - at its home at 10 N. Beaver St. For information or to register for a gallery tour, visit http://www.creativeyork.org.

Food vouchers, sponsored by WellSpan Health, will be available to participants while tickets last and will be redeemable at the food trucks throughout the event while supplies last. Restrooms will be open at the Appell Center.

Second Friday Latino September is presented by Latinos Unidos of York, in cooperation with York County Hispanic Coalition and Appell Center for the Performing Arts, with support from YMCA of the Roses, WellSpan Health and CASA.
