Historic Poole Forge to present trout derby, photography show

Historic Poole Forge (HPF) has scheduled its annual Children's Trout Derby and a photography show featuring the work of local photographers.

The ninth annual Children's Trout Derby is set for Saturday, April 22. Registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m., with fishing slated for 9 a.m. to noon. The free event will be held rain or shine.

Children will be divided into two age groups: ages 4 to 8 and ages 9 to 12. Prizes will be awarded in both groups. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Food, including breakfast sandwiches, will be offered by the Caernarvon Fire Company ladies auxiliary.

Beartown Sportsman's Association will assist with the derby. "They will be stocking the (Conestoga) creek the night prior (to the derby)," said Dawn Eckdahl, HPF executive director, noting that the association will host its own derby on Saturday, May 6, and the community is invited to attend.

At the conclusion of the derby, fishing will be open to everyone. A Pennsylvania Fishing License is required.

"I think (the trout derby) is our best event of the year because at the end of it all you have so many happy kids," said Eckdahl. "All the kids are smiling."

The photography show in the HPF mansion will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and 23, from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Additionally, a selection of prints and cards will be available for sale.

Eckdahl said that many new photographers will display their work this year, including a local high school student. "We will have a little bit of everything. There will be (photos of) landscapes and wildlife and nature," Eckdahl noted.

The goal of the show is to provide a venue for area photographers to display their work. "Most of them are not seasoned professionals. For some of them, it is the first time displaying their work," Eckdahl said. "The whole point is to give local photographers who don't normally participate in shows or contests an avenue to get their work out."

HPF is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon (Churchtown), 7 miles east of New Holland and 5 miles west of Morgantown. For more information about either HPF event, visit http://www.historicpooleforge.org or http://www.facebook.com/pooleforge or call 484-797-5302.
