Historical Program Planned

The Muddy Creek Farm Library will host a historical meeting on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. at Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata.

Local historian Kenneth Sensenig will tell a local Revolutionary War story of a Mennonite couple who gave their lives in ministry to wounded soldiers from the American Revolution. John and Anna Baer helped to care for wounded soldiers at the Ephrata Cloister, where crowded conditions led to a typhus infection that killed dozens of soldiers, as well as the Baers. The presentation will explore the crisis of conscience presented by the Baers' nonresistant faith in the context of war. The evening will include an unveiling of a painting and plaque remembering the service and sacrifice of the Baers.

Kenneth Burkholder, Amos B. Hoover, James K. Nolt, and Lloyd Weiler will display and describe several artifacts and related items of interest. A book table will feature several books related to the Mennonites' experience during the American Revolution, including a re-publication of John Ruth's "'Twas Seeding Time."

The event is open to the public. Admission is free, and donations will be accepted. For more information, call the Muddy Creek Farm Library at 717-354-7635.
