Historical Society Plans Program

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a presentation titled "The Susquehanna Plays an Unsung Role in the Early Days of America" when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, in the Millersville Borough Administration & Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Jim McClure, author and retired editor of the York Daily Record/Sunday News.

McClure will discuss how the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay played an unsung role during the nine months in 1777 and 1778 when the Continental Congress was in York County. In York, the delegates adopted the Articles of Confederation and ratified treaties with France, but the Susquehanna was never far from the minds of the 64 statesmen. McClure will speak about the river and Congress as delegates made York their home before returning to Philadelphia in June 1778.  A question-and-answer period will close the presentation.

McClure, who resides in York Township, has written 10 books on York County history, among them his 2024 paperback, "Never To Be Forgotten: A History of York County, PA."  A member of the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Hall of Fame, the Kentucky native is also the moderator of a 36,000-member Facebook group on York County and regional history, called Retro York. He holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown and a graduate degree in American studies from Penn State-Harrisburg.
