Historical society plans tours, presentation

Solanco Historical Society will offer tours of the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville, on Sundays, Aug. 18, Aug. 25, and Sept. 1, as well as on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2. The hours will be from 1 to 5 p.m. There is a nominal entrance fee for adults and for children over age 5. For more details, call 717-548-2679. 

In addition, the historical society will host a presentation on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the society's archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The free program will begin at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

J. Arthur Moore will present "The Real Boys of the Civil War." More than 200,000 boys age 17 and under served in the opposing armies during the Civil War, and additional youths served in the navies. The youngest to see action was 6-and-a-half-year-old Jimmie Johnson, son of Capt. John V. Johnson, of the U.S. gunboat Forest Rose.

Jimmie's story and those of many others will be presented in the program, which will include a display of artifacts and a slideshow. The event will conclude with signings of Moore's latest book, "The Real Boys of the Civil War," as well as his Civil War and Native American historical fiction collection and his Virginia and Truckee Railroad fiction collection.

Moore is an award-winning author and an educator with 42 years experience in public, private, and independent settings. He is also an amateur photographer and has illustrated his works with his own photographs. To learn more, visit http://www.jarthurmoore.com.
