Historical Society Posts Bike Tour

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) will host a local history bike tour on the Warwick Ephrata Rail Trail (WERT) on Saturday, June 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants should gather at Ephrata's trailhead at Fulton Street and Railroad Avenue by 9:15 a.m. In the case of rain, the tour will take place on Sunday, June 6.

Tour leader and LMHS board member John Weber will guide the group from Ephrata to Lititz on the WERT, which follows the abandoned Reading and Columbia railroad constructed in 1863 at the outset of the Civil War. The five-stop bike tour will include the Jacob Huber house, where Moravian leader Count Zinzendorf tried to unite all Pennsylvania Germans through his preaching. Another stop focuses on the Hess Homestead, which dates to 1734. The late Clarke Hess restored this property, and a number of his well-documented and rare material culture artifacts are now part of LMHS' collections.

There is a fee to participate. Register at http://bit.ly/BikeWERT by Friday, May 28.
