Historical Society Posts Lecture Series

Manheim Township Historical Society will present its 2022 Autumn Series, "Underground Railroad" by Leroy Hopkins, a retired Millersville University professor. The three-part series will discuss the history of the Underground Railroad in Lancaster County.

The series will be held in the Morgan Center Room at Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. All programs will start at 1 p.m.

"Underground Railroad - Enslaved Africans in Lancaster County" will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20. This segment will discuss slave owners, tasks assigned to slaves, and the growth of free African societies.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, "Underground Railroad - Traditional Historiography" will be presented. The program will feature author Robert Clemens Smedley's "History of the Underground Railroad in Chester and Neighboring Counties."

The final segment, "Underground Railroad in Lancaster County, Welsh Mountain and Columbia Vicinities," will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15. New information on how the Underground Railroad operated in the local area will be presented.
